Before sunrise you want another layer; once the sun climbs, you want to roll up your sleeves. Build that temperature swing into a spring or autumn fishing outfit and the whole day becomes easier.
Instead of relying on one heavy coat, use 3 removable layers, each with a distinct purpose. Plan for casting freedom and somewhere to stow each removed layer as well as warmth.
Give each of the 3 layers one job
- 1. Base layer
- Layer close to the skin. Choose something that doesn't trap sweat and allows you to move your arms easily.
- 2. Mid-layer
- This layer provides warmth and shapes the look. Long-sleeved shirts and hoodies that are easy to put on and take off are good options.
- 3. Outer shell
- A layer to protect against wind and light rain. Keep its job distinct from the mid-layer.
Wearing too many layers of thick clothing can make it difficult to move your shoulders and elbows. Try raising your arms, twisting your body, and squatting to find a thickness that doesn't interfere with your fishing movements.
Wear layers early and late; remove them before you overheat
Around dawn and dusk, the low sun can make conditions feel especially cold. Wear the mid-layer while travelling, then remove it before you begin to sweat as walking and sunlight warm you.
If there are large gaps around your neck, wrists, and waist, cold air will easily get in. Secure the cuffs and hem without overtightening them, and leave enough room to rotate your shoulders.
Plan where removed layers will go
A layer becomes part of your luggage the moment you remove it. Reserve space for one removed layer and carry a separate bag for wet clothing so nothing has to be left on the ground.
Build the palette on navy, black or grey, then place pale blue on the upper body for a cohesive result. If you use multiple clothes or hats with logos, make one the centerpiece and keep the others subdued. Even with colourful fishing gear, the outfit will remain composed.

Items introduced in this article
The pale hoodie shown has a restrained chest graphic that works naturally as a mid-layer. Pair it with an outer shell for warmth, and remove a layer early if walking or casting makes you hot.
For your safety:Even if you prepare for temperature differences, it is essential to check the weather and footing, and wear a life jacket correctly. Be sure to follow the rules for restricted areas and the facility, and end your plans early if you feel cold or tired.
