Rainy-Day Fishing: Three Layers, Sure Footing & a Clear Stop Plan

On rainy days, it is not only the water coming in from outside that cools the body. Sweat accumulates inside your rainwear, and you may feel cold as soon as you take a break.

Build three layers from the skin outward, then check that you can see clearly around the face and move safely on wet footing. Set clear stop conditions before the weather worsens. On a rainy day, what you wear and when you leave belong in the same plan.

Build three layers from the skin outward

  1. Base layer:A layer that helps move sweat away from the skin.
  2. Mid layer:A front-opening layer that makes temperature adjustment easy.
  3. Rain shell:The outer layer that blocks rain and wind.

A thick cotton layer can be slow to dry once wet. For breaks, move to a safe covered area and vent the front of the mid layer to release trapped heat and moisture.

Test your hat, hood and life jacket together

A brimmed cap under the hood can help keep rain away from the face. Adjust the hood so you retain a clear view when turning your head in either direction.

Wear the life jacket correctly over or with rainwear according to the product instructions. Make sure that the hood or high collar does not restrict neck movement, and that the fabric does not get caught in the life jacket’s straps or buckles.

Choose footwear for grip as well as waterproofing

Choose secure-fitting footwear with dependable grip on wet surfaces. Make sure trouser hems do not drag on the ground, and keep spare socks and clothes in waterproof inner bags.

Water may collect underfoot as waves rise and visibility deteriorates. If conditions begin to change, leave while movement is still safe; rainfall intensity is not the only factor.

Set your stop conditions before departure

Stop fishing at any sign of lightning, strong winds or high waves. Even if the rain is light, if your footing is dangerous, make it your top priority not to continue.

  • Moisture-moving base layer
  • Easy-to-vent mid layer
  • Rain shell suited to the conditions
  • Hat with brim that does not obstruct visibility
  • Footwear with grip on wet surfaces
  • Change of clothes in a waterproof bag
  • Stop conditions set before departure

Items introduced in this article

The featured full-zip hoodie works as a mid layer for regulating temperature beneath a rain shell. It is not waterproof; add a separate outer shell designed for the expected rain and wind.

  • Premium Full-Zip Hoodie: An intermediate layer for temperature regulation that has a separate role from the outer rain shell.

For your safety:Check the latest weather and footing information at the fishing spot, and wear a life jacket correctly. Do not fish when there is lightning, strong wind, high waves or unsafe footing, and be sure to follow the rules of restricted areas and each facility.
