When you return from fishing, your cap will not only have visible dirt, but also sweat, salt, and sunscreen. If you leave the cap in your bag because you are tired, it is more likely to develop odors and lose its shape.
Use this four-step routine when you get home: Check the label, remove dry dirt, clean only the areas that need it, then reshape and dry. Do not assume the whole cap is washable; proceed carefully with each material.
1. Check the care label and materials
The material of the cap may differ for the body, brim, mesh, and embroidery. First, check the label for each product to see if it can be washed with water or if detergent can be used.
Lift dust, sand and dried salt from the surface with a dry, soft brush or cloth. Avoid scrubbing the embroidery; use light strokes across the surface.
2. Blot only the areas that need cleaning
If the care label permits it, apply diluted mild detergent to areas such as the inner sweatband. Test an inconspicuous area first for any change in color or texture.
Dampen a cloth with a small amount of diluted detergent, then blot gently without rubbing. Next, use another cloth moistened with water and blot several times to remove every trace of detergent. Do not leave the embroidery or brim soaking in water.
3. Blot away moisture and restore the shape
Use a dry towel to remove moisture from the surface, then loosely fill the crown with another towel to restore its form. Avoid direct sunlight and dry in a well-ventilated place.
Avoid strong heat from a hair dryer or tumble dryer as this may affect the material and shape. Protecting the shape matters more than speeding up the drying process.
4. Once completely dry, protect the brim and store
- Make sure it's dry inside
- Do not place heavy objects on the brim
- Do not store in a bag that traps moisture for a long time
- Do not leave it in a car where it will get hot
